Volusia County is home to five species of sea turtles, each with its own unique characteristics and behaviors. The Loggerhead Turtle is the most common on the beaches, known for its block-like head and strong jaws. The Leatherback Turtle is the largest, with a leathery shell and the ability to reach up to 7 feet in length and weigh up to 1,500 pounds. The Green Turtle is herbivorous, feeding on plants, sea grasses, and algae. The Hawksbill Turtle has a distinct carapace and tortoiseshell color, with overlapping scales. Lastly, the Kemp's Ridley is the most endangered sea turtle, weighing less than 100 pounds.
